Killing Heidi singer Ella Hooper looks unrecognisable during her appearance on Today

Remember her? Killing Heidi singer Ella Hooper, 38, looks unrecognisable as she appears on TV in rare interview

Ella Hooper rose to fame as the enigmatic front woman of the Australian rock band, Killing Heidi, in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

And on Saturday, the singer looked unrecognisable during a rare TV interview on Weekend Today.

The 38-year-old has ditched her signature long and edgy dreadlock hairstyle, instead swapping it for short auburn tresses.

She also traded in her daring outfits and platform boots for a black top and leather jacket with patches and embellishments.

During the interview, she reminisced about her fashion choices in her heyday, calling it all a bit of ‘fun’.

She told hosts David Campbell and Belinda Russell: ‘When I think of the nineties, look I know the nineties had a bit of a grungy aesthetic, maybe an angsty undertone.’

‘But it was also a lot of fun. I did some raving. I had me some phat pants,’ she laughed.

‘We talk about the fashion, and obviously I have a lot of crimes for which I’m still paying for,’ she added, noting that fashion was a topic discussed in her new 90s music theme podcast called Front & Centre.

‘I think I still have the huge shoes,’ she added.

In 1999, Killing Heidi – made up of Ella, her brother Jesse and their friends Aaron Hart on drums and Rowen Murphy – stormed the Australian music charts with their hit song Mascara from their debut album Reflector.

The band continued to rack up more hits with their follow up songs Superman/Supergirl and Weir, and won four ARIA Awards in 2000, including Album of the Year and Best Group.

The band went on to release three albums: Reflector (2000), Present (2002) and Killing Heidi (2004).

The band from Violet Town, Victoria, split in 2006, before reforming in 2016 after a 10-year hiatus.
