Can dogs pass on coronavirus to their owners?

Fewer than 50 animals worldwide have been diagnosed with coronavirus and dogs are the least susceptible to getting it.

In line with public health guidance, you should wash your hands before and after being around or handling animals or their food.

In theory, the fur on pets can act as infection-carrying surfaces and so even if they don’t catch coronavirus, they may still spread it.

If they come into contact with a human who has Covid-19, a pet may carry the virus around on their fur, paws, tail or face – and could therefore infect other humans who stroke, hold or feed them. The droplets could live on their bodies for up to 72 hours.

However, according to the Government website, there is no evidence that coronavirus passes between animals or that pets transmit the virus to humans.

Any animals that have tested positive for coronavirus have been infected by a human.

There is no evidence that you need to wash your pets to control the spread of coronavirus.

Only use products on your pets that are approved for use on animals.

It is rare for an animal to contract coronavirus, and they tend to show only mild symptoms and recover within a few days.
