The presenter said Kelly’s seen as a chameleon and is often unrecognisable in her roles, and the actress said: ‘I think there’s a long game in it for sure, it was probably unhelpful in my career because people didn’t recognise me from job to job.

‘But I hope if you look at the body of work it is obvious… I very lucky that I haven’t been put in a box.’

Kelly’s looked stylish for her TV appearance as she wore a chic maxi dress that had a pleated skirt and a floral print that perfectly complemented her new hairdo.

Innocent was filmed during the Covid-19 crisis, and of the process she reflected: ‘We actually filmed most of it in Ireland, so Ireland went into lockdown quite a bit before us [in the UK].

‘We’re supposed to go in March, I arrived in September, it was one of the first shows that started back up… it was a huge responsibility to make sure we did it well.

‘I had to self-isolate for two weeks, and hardly any hotels were open at that time, but they couldn’t looked after me more.’

Katherine added of her character: ‘She’s been in prison for five years for something she didn’t commit.

‘How do you do that? She never talks about it either, she’s very forward thinking and wants to get on with her life, but it’s always there.’

On Tuesday, Katherine unveiled a new pink hairstyle after admitting that back-to-back acting jobs forced her to wait five years to switch colours.

The ultimate downside of her screen success has meant that she hasn’t been able to experiment with her hair, as her roles regularly require her to switch between blonde and brunette.

In a new interview with the Radio Times, the screen star laughed as she said: ‘People think that you are the characters you play, and, you know, we’re not.

‘I mean, I don’t own a suit. I enjoy being that chameleon and I love embracing a role. I’ve been very lucky – I tend to go from job to job. But that means I can never choose my own hair colour. I’ve wanted to dye it pink for about five years.’

Katherine got her big break in 2006, when she landed the coveted role of Becky McDonald in long-running ITV soap Coronation Street.

Initially signing up for 12 episodes, the Barnsley-born actress would film more than 700 episodes during her unexpectedly extended stint, which ran until 2012.
