Fatherhood trailer follows Kevin Hart as he tries to raise his daughter on his own

Kevin Hart brings a heartwarming true story to life in the first trailer for Fatherhood, debuting on Netflix this coming Father’s Day.

Hart stars as Matt, based on the true story of Matthew Logelin, who gained a daughter, Madeline, but lost his wife Liz all within a 27-hour period.

The film is based on his 2011 memoir Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love, which was a New York Times best seller.

The trailer begins with Hart’s character Matt, who enters a mother’s group with his newborn Maddy, stating, ‘Excuse me, but she’s been crying for hours.’

Matt is told that, ‘this is a group for mothers,’ but Matt retorts that the, ‘sign out there says parents. I’m a parent and I don’t know what the hell I’m doing.’

‘Girl’s got some stuff flying out her a**, she can either hit you with a streamer or buckshot you. It’s a quick whop. I need help,’ he says, as the women around him can clearly all relate.

The trailer also features Jordan (Lil Rel Howrey) who tells Marian (Alfre Woodard), ‘I don’t know how you’re gonna do this,’ as Matt is woken up by his newborn.

He’s seen walking Maddy around a backyard, telling Maddy, ‘If you could have one parent I wish you could’ve had your mom. She would’ve been better at it.’

We then see Matt leaving flowers at his late wife’s grave, adding, ‘Mommy was the best at it.’

Matt then enlists Jordan and another friend (Anthony Carrigan) to try and sing Maddy to sleep, though it does not work, and when Matt tries to ‘clap’ her to sleep, Jordan reminds him, ‘She’s not a clapper.’

Marian tells Matt that she thinks he should move back to Minnesota because the baby needs family.

The trailer fast forwards a few years with an older Maddy (Melody Hurd) getting her hair done by her father, with not the best results.

Matt is told by a nun that Madeline, ‘doesn’t have a mother to model herself after,’ with Matt responding, ‘I am well aware of what my daughter doesn’t have.’

Marian tells Matt plainly that he can’t do this, but he adds, ‘No you’re right, I can’t do this. But you know what? I’m going to do it, because I’m her father.’

Matt is seen arriving at a hospital after Maddy gets hurt, as he reflects that he got there in time to ‘hold her hand,’ but he never got to hold his wife Liz’s hand before she died.

The father and daughter are seen getting out of a car as Maddy complains, ‘It’s always just us. Other people have more people.’

Matt is told by his father, ‘You’re trying to make everything perfect, but we don’t have any control.’

Maddy tells her dad, ‘Whereever you are, I wanna go there,’ and Matt responds, ‘Whereever you are I wanna go there too,’ as Jordan starts crying and says someone is ‘cutting onions’ around here.

The trailer winds down with a number of shots of Matt and Maddy having fun at an amusement park and celebrating Maddy’s birthday.

Marian adds, ‘She would be so proud of you,’ referring to his late wife Liz.

Matt is on his daughter’s bed, giving her, ‘Two kisses, one for mommy, one for me.’

The final shot shows a reticent Matt taking Maddy into a haunted house, telling her not to be scared, but a clown jumps out and Matt punches him in the face, causing everyone to scream.

‘You hit the clown!’ Maddy screams, as Matt helps the dazed clown up, adding, ‘No he OK, Maddy,’ as the clown gives a thumbs up.

Fatherhood, directed by Paul Weitz and written by Weitz and Dana Stevens, will be released on Netflix June 18.
