Kate Garraway discussed the difference in her relationship since her husband Derek Draper returned from hospital amid his coronavirus battle. 

The Good Morning Britain host appeared on Lorraine on Tuesday – her 54th birthday – where she spoke of ‘the hope’ she holds for her husband, whose battle with the illness has had life-changing consequences, and how he ‘wants pride’. 

During her discussion with Lorraine, 61, she grew tearful when the Scottish host presented her with flowers for her birthday, to which she said: ‘Thanks for everyone, you’ve been so wonderful, I’ve been so lucky’.

Kate and Derek’s trauma began at the start of the pandemic last year when he was taken to hospital with very low oxygen levels in March.

His condition worsened and he became one of the most stricken patients, remaining in intensive care for a year and despite having returned home he is seriously ill and doctors say he was the most seriously sick patient to have survived the virus. 

The former Blair lobbyist returned home last month to their home, which Kate has drastically overhauled to house Derek’s limited mobility. 

When asked about the prospect of giving up during her year of hell, Kate said: ‘No and really, what is the choice? If I give up, I’d be throwing in the towel…

‘Derek wasn’t giving up, he didn’t throw in towel, the nurses and doctors didn’t throw in towel? I think hope is tangible and concrete if you can make it so…

‘There is hope, you still have to think of hope in future and lots of people helped me have hope for the future’. 

Speaking about holding things together and their relationship now, Kate said: ‘It’s strange, you think that Derek was his own person, big force of nature, and now everything is so quiet, we have to feed him and help with his medications and do things for him…

‘It’s a different relationship, now I’m thinking that there’s a sort of tenderness, it is love and he feels it back. We’ll hopefully be able to get some balance in that, so he wants to have some pride. He wants to look at his wife.’

Lorraine then gifted Kate with a large bunch of flowers, to which she grew emotional and teary before revealing her birthday plans. 

She said: ‘My mum and dad are allowed to visit, they are in my bubble. We’re Going to have family meal and gather around Derek…
