Europe’s papers react with JOY at Big Six English clubs withdrawing from the European Super League

‘BREXIT’… ‘They’ve CRUMBLED!’ Europe’s papers react with glee as withdrawal of the English Big Six signals the END of Super League

  • The Super League is SUSPENDED after Big Six all pull out on dramatic evening
  • Chelsea fans gathered outside Stamford Bridge and staged a mass protest
  • The Blues soon withdrew, as did Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs
  • Europe’s sports papers focused in on the broken plans on their covers today
  • Spanish sports paper Mundo Deportivo headlined with ‘BREXIT’ while Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport described it as a ‘Super escape!’

Europe’s media rejoiced on Wednesday morning after the controversial European Super League plans were left in tatters, with Mundo Deportivo boldly headlining with ‘BREXIT’ following all of England’s ‘Big Six’ withdrawing their membership.

Chelsea fans staged a mass protest outside Stamford Bridge and the Blues and Manchester City began the process of killing off the rebel league less than 48 hours after its launch by pulling out, with Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham all eventually following suit.

The Super League proposal was the brainchild of Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, whose dreams were in tatters on Tuesday night after Premier League clubs reacted to condemnation from fans, government and pundits.

Spanish sports paper Mundo came down hard on the 73-year-old executive, headlining with ‘BREXIT‘ on their front cover this morning alongside ‘Super League agony – the English clubs leave Florentino’s project’ while AS stated: ‘England blows up the Super League!’

Another Spanish paper, SPORT, simply said: ‘The Super League collapses’ on a night of high drama in England with ramifications across the continent.

Mundo added that the project was now ‘at the point of death’, with Barcelona set to put their position to be a members vote.

Meanwhile, Marca ran with the headline ‘Super ridiculous’ following the dramatic evening of events, stating that ‘Florentino’s project failed in 48 hours.’

The Madrid-based paper adds that ‘pressure from the English fans, cries of football for the people, tumbles it,’ with the outlet now predicting ‘trouble’ for Spanish trio Real, Barca and Atletico.

Across in Italy, Gazzetta dello Sport described it as a ‘Super escape!’ as the plan of the 12 clubs involved ‘crumbled.’

It adds that Perez and Juventus president Andrea Agnelli are now very isolated, with president of the Italian Football Federation Gabriele Gravina taking a hard line against the rebel clubs of Juve, Inter and AC MIlan.

Corriere dello Sport similarly headlined with ‘It’s collapsing!’, describing Tuesday’s events as a ‘shock’ and insisting Barca and Atletico are now also ‘wobbling.’

They stated it was a ‘day full of surprises’, with Agnelli admitting the ESL has been ‘forced to change.’

Over at Tuttosport too, they said ‘They’ve crumbled!’ and insist AC Milan have also thrown in the towel.

Elsewhere, famed French sports paper L’Equipe said: ‘This is football’ while Portuguese paper A Bola created a striking image of a tombstone alongside the headline ‘RIP Superliga’.
