The Voice: Blake Shelton labels his fellow coaches as ‘disgusting Hollywood swamp’ to sway singers

Blake Shelton referred to his fellow coaches on The Voice as ‘a disgusting Hollywood swamp’ on Tuesday as the blind auditions continued on the NBC show.

The seven-time show winner, 44, was determined to use every weapon in his arsenal to win talent, and so played up his ‘down-home’ appeal.

To that end, he implied that the other singers coaching this season were shallow celebrities who’d abandoned their roots.

Blake tried this tactic first on Aaron Konzelman, 39, from Waco, Texas, a soulful, bearded performer who covered Duran Duran’s Ordinary World.

John Legend, 42, immediately turned for Aaron and praised his artistry and ‘infectious’ joy onstage.

By contrast, Blake just emphasized his country origins, telling Aaron, ‘I am the only coach who doesn’t live in Hollywood. I don’t want to ever lose sight of my roots.’

Blake turned to the other coaches and said, ‘All three of you have gone Hollywood.’

‘Whaaaat?!’ asked a confused Kelly Clarkson, 38.

‘You came to Hollywood and started dating Gwen Stefani, the ultimate manifestation of California girl!’ John reminded Blake.

‘You see how ugly it gets in here?’ Blake told Aaron, who chose him as his coach. ‘Way to avoid the disgusting Hollywood swamp!’

The God’s Country singer tried that approach again after listening to Ethan Lively, 17, a deep-voiced country singer from Coalfield, Tennessee.

Ethan was working two jobs back home, but hoped that after high school he ‘could get a third job on the list of playing and singing for people.’

‘Never in my life did I think I’d make it on a big TV show,’ said the teen, who sang George Strait’s You Look So Good In Love with a gentle twang.

This time, Blake was the only coach to turn his chair, but he kept at his game.

He teased the Texas-born Kelly for not choosing Ethan, saying she’d gone too Hollywood.

‘Don’t go Hollywood,’ Blake urged Ethan.

John eyeballed Blake, declaring that he’d developed ‘a consistent new line of attack.’

‘I think you’re fearing that you’ve gone too Hollywood, and so you’re projecting,’ John considered. ‘I think you should change the spelling of your name and make it ”Blaque with a Q-U-E”.’

‘I heard he’s getting spray tans now,’ murmured Nick Jonas, 28.

‘Get out of this town as quick as you can, man,’ Blake told Ethan. ‘You don’t want to be like Kelly and forget your roots.’

‘Blake Shelton trying to serve us up on some kind of Hollywood platter is ironic,’ Kelly told the cameras. ‘He’s always the one on the covers of magazines, and he’s dating Gwen Stefani! He is the MOST Hollywood!’

Blake called himself ‘King of The Voice,’ but John called him ‘king of projection.’

Without his Hollywood jibes, Blake failed to nab any other artists for his team.

Gean Garcia, 19, from McAllen, Texas, was first to audition with a haunting version of Kodaline’s All I Want that made Kelly, Blake, and Nick turn their chairs.

Blake blocked Nick from pursuing Gean, whose voice Kelly called ‘beautifully broken.’

Gean had already toured and released songs with his father Jon Carlos, a well-known Spanish Christian artist popular in South America.

‘I’ve always felt like music was in my DNA,’ said the teen, who made Kelly his coach.

She sang Sam Smith’s Stay With Me, attracting interest from both Nick and John, who called her voice a ‘tour-de-force’ and then became her coach.

Zae Romeo, 21, from McKinney, Texas, had gone through a lot before The Voice, being raised in the foster care system and adopted, then running away.

To inspire other young kids, Zae sang a heartbreaking, but ultimately uplifting version of Harry Styles’ Falling, which turned all four chairs.

Blake praised Zae’s ‘endearing vibrato’ that was ‘as tender as you want it to be.’

But Nick’s pitch won out, as he called listening to Zae a ‘spiritual’ experience and compared him to Labyrinth, who turned out to be one of Zae’s favorite artists.

Just one person failed to make it through on the one-hour episode.

Yellsmiles, 30, from Hamburg, New Jersey, did not get a chair turn from any of the judges for her cover of the Miley Cyrus song Midnight Sky.
