Rodrigo has made headlines with her own love life, after dropping Driver’s License in January, supposedly inspired by her love triangle with HSMTMTS costar Joshua Bassett, 20, and Sabrina Carpenter, 21.

Her onscreen romance reportedly made its way offscreen, as she and Bassett were romantically linked last year, before he moved on with Carpenter during the summer.

The Bizaardvark actress apparently changed ‘brunette’ to ‘blonde’ in one lyric, following the 2020 teaser track, leading many to believe that it’s about Carpenter, a blonde.

She sings in the final version: ‘And you’re probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m insecure about.’

Bassett released his own single Lie, Lie, Lie a week after Driver’s License dropped, with Carpenter unleashing her own apparent response track Skin another week later.

‘So, I don’t think I could write a song that was meaningful or emotional about somebody that I don’t know. But I think artists should be able to write about whatever they want to write about.’

She’s still playing coy about the story behind the song, after she told Billboard: ‘I totally understand people’s curiosity with the specifics of who the song’s about and what it’s about, but to me, that’s really the least important part of the song.

‘It’s resonating with people because of how emotional it is, and I think everything else is not important.’

The California-born actress/singer is back with Bassett for season two of HSMTMTS, which premieres May 14 on Disney+.
