Sienna Miller says she sympathises with Britney Spears after explosive documentary

Sienna Miller ‘really relates’ to Britney Spears, and likened her own early days of stardom to ‘living a video-game existence, being hunted relentlessly’.

The actress, 39, explained how she battled a ‘perpetual state of anxiety’ while adjusting to life in the spotlight when she first shot to fame in 2004 for her roles in Layer Cake and Alfie, and high-profile relationship with ex-fiancé Jude Law, 48.

Sienna said she sympathised with Britney, 39, while watching ‘unmanageable’ moments where the singer ‘cracked’ in explosive documentary, Framing Britney Spears, which looks into her life and controversial conservatorship.

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian‘s G2 supplement, Sienna said: ‘I was definitely a victim of that, and I couldn’t handle it. I don’t know how anyone could.’

She added: ‘I think the reaction from a lot of women under that kind of scrutiny at the time was to just lose it a little bit. You’re in a perpetual state of anxiety. You’re living this video-game existence, being hunted relentlessly.

‘Watching the documentary, I could really relate to those moments where she cracks because it’s unmanageable. It is aggressive and terrifying and you lose control.’

Sienna, who admitted in 2017 that her former ‘party girl days’ were ‘hurtful to her career’, was previously one of the It girls of the London social scenes.

The star was famously in an on-off relationship with Jude, which began in 2003 and, following a long break, came to its ultimate end at the start of 2011.

Framing Britney Spears is directed by Samantha Stark for the New York Times and Hulu, and focuses on the singer’s court-sanctioned conservatorship overseen by her father, Jamie Spears.

Jamie was granted conservatorship over his daughter in 2008 – giving him control over her financial and medical decisions – after she faced mental health struggles, which put her in hospital.

Framing Britney Spears also features the singer’s rise to stardom – from her early childhood to her first record deal, revealing the many ways her narrative has been manipulated by those in her life.

Elsewhere during the interview, Sienna spoke about her film, Wander Darkly, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival back in January 2020, and the star admitted that she had to be reassured that it wouldn’t be an ‘absolute disaster’.

The movie tells the story of a couple, Adrienne (Sienna) and Matteo (Diego Luna), who are traumatised by an accident.

Sienna revealed that she and co-star Diego ‘basically got nothing’ for the film and insisted that you don’t do independent films for the ‘pay cheque’.

The actress, who has also been vocal about the gender pay gap in the industry, also praised the late Chadwick Boseman, who tragically passed away from colon cancer aged 43 in August, after working together on 2019 film 21 Bridges.

She said that Chadwick, after discovering that the studio wouldn’t pay her the fee she was asking for, paid the difference himself.

Sienna called the actor’s act of generosity ‘incredibly validating’ and added it was a ‘total anomaly in Hollywood’ for someone to do that.

In 2017, the actress revealed that she had turned her life around after realising that her former ‘party girl days’ were ‘hurtful’ to receiving acting offers and that she was now thankfully reaping the benefits.

Sienna admitted in an interview with LOVE magazine that her career was only just recovering after years of embracing the party lifestyle.

She told the publication: ‘I probably could’ve had all that I’m experience now if I’d been savvy and smarter.

‘But I just wanted to have fun and not taper my behaviour in any way, and it was hurtful, somehow, to my career.’

Discussing what influenced her party-hopping lifestyle, she explained: ‘I grew up in the 90s watching everyone getting away with what they got away with. I was like, “Oh, the Gallaghers [did it], f**k it.”‘

Sienna revealed that these days she’s more likely to be spending her evenings at home with her daughter Marlowe, now eight, who she shares with ex Tom Sturridge, 35.

The former party girl joked at the time that while she might be more ‘boring’, she feels happier and more focused than ever.

The British beauty has since won acclaim in films such as American Sniper and Foxcatcher, she is currently busy filming Netflix political drama Anatomy Of A Scandal in London.

Sienna shares her eight-year-old daughter with former partner Tom Sturridge, from whom she split in 2015, following a four-year romance.

She was famously in an on-off relationship with Jude Law, 48, which began in 2003 and, following a long break, came to its ultimate end at the start of 2011.

Sienna more recently embarked on a romance with Lucas Zwirner, though their relationship came to an end in the latter half of last year, prompting the star to relocate back to the UK from New York City.
